"is" vs. "are"
This is where "is" and "are" do battle for propriety, as I cited in my post about "Mashed Potatoes & Gravy".
Should we say "mashed potatoes & gravy" IS my favorite — or "mashed potatoes & gravy" ARE my favorite. I vote for "IS" because it's a singular dish.
But what about these other classic food combinations? Does an ampersand contribute to the singleness?
peanut butter & jelly
ham & eggs
strawberries & cream
sausage & grits
liver & onions
BLT (bacon, lettuce, and tomato)
fish & chips
red beans & rice
corned beef & cabbage
beans & wieners/weenies
I know where I stand; but where do you stand?
